About Todd The Big Dog

ToddTheBigDog.com is built around real life with a real large dog — the good, the challenging, and the deeply rewarding parts of sharing your life with a big canine companion.

This site exists to help people understand large dogs beyond basic obedience, focusing on behavior, emotional needs, structure, and the responsibility that comes with size and intelligence.

Large dogs experience the world differently. They form strong bonds, notice patterns, and thrive when treated as purposeful members of the family.

How Todd Joined Our Family

Todd the Big Dog as a puppy
Todd as a puppy — before we understood how big he would become.

March 29, 2023 — Todd was born.

Before Todd, our family had Ellie, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon — energetic, intelligent, affectionate, and naturally people-focused.

After Ellie settled in, it became clear she wanted more than play. She needed a companion.

So we searched — shelters, listings, long drives — waiting for the right dog.

The Day Ellie Chose Todd

One afternoon we found an ad for Labradoodle puppies north of us. The photos were unclear — but something said go.

We brought Ellie.

There was one puppy left.

His name was Todd.

Ellie walked straight to him — no hesitation.

Ellie chose Todd. From that moment on, they were a pair.

Growing Into a Big Dog

Todd fully grown — calm, observant, and very aware of his size.

As Todd grew, it became obvious he wasn’t average — physically or mentally.

A DNA test confirmed what we were seeing. His genetics explained his size, intelligence, and thoughtful nature.

Living with Todd taught us that big dogs don’t just need space — they need involvement, structure, and purpose.
